The test, match commenced at the Basin Reserve in glorious, weather, bright sunshine and a light northerly wind. Turnbull and Benson stood down from the English side. Earle was the twelfth man. Lowry won the toss and decided to bat on a perfect wicket. There was a good attendance of spectators. Dempster and Mills opened New Zealand’s innings at 11.30 to the bowling of Nichols and Allom. The last ball of Nichols’s first over struck Dempster on the head and went for one bye. Dempster batting soundly, reached double figures after quarter of an hour’s play. Barratt replaced Allom after an ever and 20 went on the board in twenty minutes. At noon the score was 0 for 25 (Dempster 20, Mills 4).

The score mounted steadily, Dempster doing most of the scoring. Dempster lost his bat ill cocking Nichols over the slips for 4. At 38 Allom replaced Nichols (none for 21, six overs). The scoring became slower.

Mills reached 10 after nearly an hour’s play. At 12.30 the score was none for 54 (Dempster 32, Mills 16.) Mills then brightened the scoring and- brought 70 up after as many minutes, reaching 20 at the same time.

At 75 Nichols replaced Allom (none for 29, off 8 overs). At 12.45 the score was none for 77 (Dempster 43, Mills 26.) Worthington came on at the south end, but this and subsequent changes did not affect the score. Dempster brought 90 up after 85 minutes. Mills put 100 on the board five minutes later. Dempster reached 50 after 95 minutes, Mills 50 next over. At lunch the score was 113 for no wickets (Dempster 53, Mills'. 51.)
