S.I. MAIN TRUNK. . WORK STARTING. B Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright WELLINGTON, Jan. 21. The virtual commencement of the construction of the uncompleted section of the South Island Main Trunk Railway was announced by the Minister of Public Works to-day. “MAUI POMARE’S” TROUBLES WELLINGTON, January 21. The suggestion that the ship Maui Pomare’s bananas were landed in an overripe condition was denied in official quarters this morning. It was stated that the fruit was landed in good condition,'and that no loss had occurred. It was true that some of tin* fruit had ripened, but that was due to the extreme heat experienced during January. It was incorrect to say that the ripeness was due to any fault in the refrigerating plant. It was possible that the public would benefit, as the result of the rip.mess: TU ATAR AS 1 NCR FA SING. The Minister of internal Affairs stated today that be is informed that Tuatara lizards are increasing in numbers. several new holes and lizards having been observed on Cuvier Island. '
