OVERSEER’S MONTHLY REPORT
I have the- honor to report upon the progress of work during the month of December.
NORTHERN RIDING MAINTENANCE.
. Repairs were effected to motor worn holes and depressions on One Milfe, Arahura Valley and Humphreys Roads. Loopline Road, badly overgrown with gorse, was cleared between the Alain Highway and the Dam. Defective decking was renewed on a culvert on Humphreys Road and a defective box culvert on One Mile Road renewed and replaced with 12 inclie diameter concrete pipes.
CENTRAL RIDING
Station Road Extension. This work is proceeding in a satisfactory manner, all the culverts, formation and greater part of the metalling being completed. Vine Creek Bridge, Station Road, is completed, except the hand wires and traffic which will be placed in position on completion of the metalling of Station Road. Arthurstown Road Widening, The clearing portion of draining, formation and metalling were completed but in unconnected short sections. The continued wet weather prevented reasonable progress being made With the formation and metalling. Riuatapu-Mahinapua Road Metalling. Work was confined to clearing and stripping the metal pit at the lake-side, also to reform portions oi old formation in readiness for metalling which will be in hand as soon as niie weather sets in.
Maintenance.—Repairs were effect od to South Hokitika, portions of Adairs, Arthurstown and Dorothy Falls Roads. Portions of Arthurstown, Adairs and Rhatapu 'Beach - Roads were cleared 6f; blackberry and .gprsc. •An cleaned dMßack Creek Road, portions of watertables were cleaned on Gaylor’s Road,- and the intersection widened. The '.power grader operated, on Adairs •>’Road, heavily grading the outer sidesJiQver a distance ofSpne mile ; watetholes were cleaned on" Blue Spur gorse cleared and short sections of watertables cleaned on Hau ! Han Road. The lower portions of /Kanieri Tram Road .was cleared of encroaching blackberry, arid low places improved for cycle traffic. Repairs were effected with gravel and broken -metal to the worst portions of Upper Municipal The extension of the car parking area between Sunny Bight R«*rl and the- lake side was completed in a fairly satisfactory manner.
Concrete pipe construction was continued at the --yard Kanieri, work ceasing on the 2.4 th for the holidays.
The road roller operated on Lower K ok-’tnhi-McArthuT, and Lake,., Kanieri Roads as circumstances .permitted, and rolled a distance of 13 miles.
The powei*' ! gr-a<]er was bccUpied practice 11 v every;,day hut one from the 2nd of the fiionth to the 24th, and graded 19$ .miles, on the- Secondary highways 1 ; 1 mile on Adairs Road, and 45 chains on Arthurstown Ro-d. a total distance of 21 miles 25 chains.
SOUTHERN RIDING. Waitaha Lagoon Bridge and Approaches. The bridge was practically completed, but continued floods prevented any approach construction
being commenced. Three Alile Track Repairs. General repairs Were effected to portions of the track to keep it o'pen for horse traffic; also to corduroying 45 links in length of soft portions of the surface.
Detour Road. The greater portion of the road was attended to by. patching the worn places with fine .gravel.
Maintenance.—The Roadman attended to repairs on Wanganui Flat, Petersen and Robertson Roads; also to the construction of a concrete pipe culvert on Wanganui Flat Road, opposite F. Haddock’s residence, which was "laced in position but not quite completed. Repairs were effected to 'portions of Wataroa Flat Road, and wind blown trees removed from RossKokatahi Track.
MAIN HIGHWAYS. REPORT
I have the honor to report upon the progress of work on thei Secondary Highways during the month of December.
LAKE KANIERI ROAD
Lake Kanieri Road Was cleaned and graded with the Power Grader from Kanieri to Lake Kanieri, aiid regraded from Kanieri to Left Hand Branch, a total distance of ll s 2 miles graded and regraded. The road was also rolled with the ten ton roller from Kanieri a distance of 4 miles. Watertables were cleared and cleaned over a distance of 27 chains; motorworn holes and ruts repaired over a distance of fi nlilep; the balance - of a slip partly removed the previous month was cleared from watertables. The rough stoney road Surface was coated with fine gravel over a distance of 10 chains: dlimps partly used replenished with fine surfacing material; The widening beyond the Mile Peg was dressed and resurfaced with fine gravel. A defective railing) 1/20 x 4 x 4 was renewed on Kanieri River Bridge, and 1/20 4 x 3 railing renewed in two covered culverts beyond Boifchers Creek track. One cul-
vert will require raising twelve inches in height to increase the waterway, and covering replaced with Bx 4 platform decking.
LOWER KOKATAHI AIcARTHUR ROAD. Lower Kokatahi Ale-Arthur Road was graded from Kanieri to Kokatahi Bridge, a distance of 8 miles. Alotor worn holes and rough portions were repaired with gravel over a distance of 11 miles, resurfacing with fine gravel over a distance of 35 chains. Tho ten ton roller operated rolling after grading and patching a distance of 6 miles. dumps were replenished over a distance of 2 miles, and''blackberry cleared from both sides of road a distance of 5 chains. Eight eighteen inch pipes were carted to Koiterangi, and 5 cubic ydrds of gravel dumped for renewal of a faulty platform culvert below Dimmick Creek Bridge No. 1. The fencing on both sides of the eastern and western approaches to Kanieri River Bridge was completed satisfactorily, by reducing the original height Of silver pine posts by six inches and capping with 4x2 heart of rimu timber. The centre rail is 4x2 rimu heart timber. The total quantity of timber used was 6/6 feet silver pine posts and 40/16x4x2 sawn heart rails containing 426.8 superficial feet of timber.
UPPER KOKATAHI ROAD
Tht; lower .portion of Lower Kokatahi Road was repaired with gravel and a quantity of roadside dumps replenished with fine gravel absorbing 65 cubic yards of material.
