MINER FINED. GREYMOUTH, January 13. Ronald Thomas Henderson, who did not appear, was fined £2 with costs on a charge of possessing prohibited articles when entering Brunner min • on December 12th.
George Smith (mine manager) said Henderson was seen to leave the bathroom with cigarettes in his possession. Defendant Was searched without result, but the manager , was not satisfied and searched again at the termination of the shift, when a partly smoked cigarette fell from Henderson’s hat. It was not a case of the man having an old butt in his pocket. Witness thought the mail had been smoking in the mine.
MANUKA CHART. Jan. 13. It is stated that the Manuka chart recovered is of no bearing on the mishap, being one of the coast from Nuggets north. The Court’s judgment will probably he given to-morrow. BOOKMAKER PINED. ROTORUA, Jan. 13. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning for breaches of the Gaming Act" by bookmaking, Hori Mau was fired £IOO sterling and costs. Magistrate Paterson said this was the fourth offence and the next would mean prison.
PROBATION TERMS
FOR HAMILTON OFFENDERS
HAMILTON, January 12. Harry Roy Hyde was given three years’ probation for robbing the panfry of a settler, who put him and his companions up for a night when their .notor cycle broke down.
The Magistrate, Air Wyvern Wilson, described the theft as meun and contemptible. The accused was ordered to abstain from liquor, to undergo a term of probation, and to make a return of the money in a month’s time.
A middle-aged man, Frank Baucke, got three years’ probation for being found T>v liight behind premises wearing slippers with intent to commit a felony. His explanation was that he suffered from insomnia, and went for a walk. The terms of"his probation require him to keep away from liquoi and not to stay out after ten.
OBITUARY
WELLINGTON, January 11
The general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand has received cable advice of the death of Mr J. B. Reid, late of Onmaru, a director of the bank, on January 9, from inflammation of the lungs.
