AUCKLAND, January 11

At Ninety Mile Beach to-day, Wizard Smith, the Australian motorist, covered one mile in 24 3-ssec, attaining a speed of 146.341 miles an hour, breaking the record for Australia and New Zealand. Near the finish rain fell. The driver’s goggles were so obscured that he was forced to slow down. The speedometer at One stage registered 160 miles an hour.

,He attempted only the one-mile dash to-day, and will probably try for the world’s ten-mile record to-morrow.

CAR COSTING OVER £20,000

LONDON, January 12,

Kaye Don lias decided upon Dayton for his attempt to beat Sir H. Segrave’s record. He will make it early in March. His four thousand horse power “Silver Bullet,” which is, not yet completed, will he shipped in February. Thus far it lias cost £20,000.
