OAMARU, January 8. "James Mitchell, perhaps. the oldest working journalist in New Zealand, died this morning. He was born at Upper Hutt, and educated at Wellington. Later he' worked at Wellington Napier, Christchurch and Dunedin on both mechanical’and ’literary sides of newspapers. His newspaper career extends over 67 years, over 50 years as a member of the “Oamaru Mail” staff. He had a remarkable record of semipublic life of over 50 years. He was continually on the North School Committee for 39 years and was Chairman of the same' committee. He was an enthusiastic bandsman, an original member of the Oamaru Garrison Band and for over 50 years its treasurer. He was a member and Chairman of the Otago Education Board and one of the Dominion’s best authorities on education. FATAL ENDING. ROTORUA, Jan. 8. Airs Alice Coupe, forty-one, of Petone. Mesdames Wilson and Lockwood are still in the hospital. The car rolled down an eighty foot bank spilling ,the occupants in the descent.
