Harbouring resentment towards the chief officer of the steamer Herminius over a matter of discipline some months ago, Frederick Gardner, aged forty-seven, a member of the crow, went to a cabin on Saturday while under the influence of liquor, used obscene language, and struck the chief officer. As a result lie appeared in Court to-day and was fined £3 and cost, in default three days’ imprisonment.

A fire sliorly before seven o’clock to-night completely destroyed a sawmill and box factory in High Street, Carterton, belonging to Davis and Cov. A strong westerly wind was blowing at the time, and the mill, containing a quantity of timber, was soon a mass of flames despite the desperate efforts of the Eire Brigade to check the blaze. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The, insurances on the plant and building total £2250 and on the stock £SOO.

Ethel Kelly aged seven who was severely injured when the motor lorry smashed on the level crossing at Aiokotina in collision with the Alinisterial train, died in the hospital tils morning.

CARGO RATE REDUCTION

GISBORNE, Jan. 8

As a result of the harbour improvements enabling steamers now to berth at the wharves, the shipping companies announce a reduction in general cargo rates from 37s to 29s 6d per ton. The cargo lightered from southern ports last year totalled. S,OOO tons.
