The summer meeting of tlie Southland R.C. concluded» to-day in beautiweather, with a large attendance. The track was in good order. The tote handled £19,218 against £19,108 on the second day last year. Ihe total for the meeting was £36,487*, against £40,315* last year. Results Gladstone Hurdles Handicap.—(s) Gayoiha 1; (2) Antrim Boy 2; (1) Maungamoe 3. Won by half a length ; the same. Time 3.18 4-5. Roslvn Harness Trot.— (9) Sunshade 1; (1) Suncross 2 ; (13) Sunbell 3. Won by one length; ohe and a-half lengths. Times 4.49 4-5 4.50. 4.50 2-5. INVERCARGILL, January 3. At the Southland races at the conclusion of the last race, an enquiry l was held into the running of Lucky Light, compared with her running in | the Waihopai Handicap on the first j day, when she was not placed. After hearing evidence, the Judicial Com- , mittee unanimously resolved that the owner’s explanation be accepted. While the inquiry was in progress, a section of the crowd staged a do- j monstration of protest, and remained on the course until the inquiry had concluded.
PLENITUDE OF 'SEALS.. ] Many holiday-makers last summer in Cornwall mentioned the increasing number of seals to be seen on the 1 Atlantic coast there. In several places ! they have mingled with the bathers, i amusing them by their antics in the surf, and have been quite willing to catch thci fish thrown to them from 1 boats. The seal’s love of music is well known, and a party of visitors [ who were in the habit of taking their i gramophone with them were repairing i to certain caves found that the music e invariably attracted the rapt atten- ] tion of a seal who had made one of e the caves its abode. c
“FRIDAY BRIDE’S ” LUCK. Miss Margaret Kellgren, daughter of Dr and Mrs Ernest Kellgren, was martried at the Swedish Church, .Harcourt Street recently to Count Herbert Hamilton, of Bolsness Manor, Sweden. At P the betrothal ceremony plain golden rings had been exchanged, and the bride received another one at the ceremony which was placed over the first.
