FIREMAN DROWNED
GREYMOUTH, November 23.
Another was added last night to the long list off victims of the Grey River, when a firemen off the Gnbrielln, Harry Tull, aged 65,, was drowned while going aboard ship. ' With a companion, named Charles Bines, he was coming alohg the wharf to his ship, when his foot caught on one of the springs, to which the moorings are tied, and he. was precipitated into the river. The alarm was immediately raised, and attempts for rescue were initiated, but until a late hour no success attended the efforts of those engaged in searching for the body. The strong current in the river, as a result of the recent heavy rains, made the rescuers’ task a difficult one, and it is quite possible that the body may have been carried down the river. The deceased had just come from the Sailors’ Rest-, and was walking between a railway truck and the wharf, when he encountered the 4 spring, and at that particular' place there was very little walking space. Ul The Gabriella ‘arrived : vn port yesterday at midday after, .being in the roadstead for-, two days; waiting foi the bar to clear.' !
