AMERICAN BETTER. BOXER.
[United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] ,
LONDON,. Nov. 19
•What promised to be one of the best, fights seen in London for years ended in. the fourth round most unfortunately when Camera (the giant .Italian) met young Stribling (tile American.) The Albert'Hall was packed for the contest and the Prince of Wales was present. He lmd an ovation.
Camera, with all confidence. entered"'the ring and bowed ostentatiously to the Prince of Wales. Stribling followed, and lie had a great reception, hut the American appeared to be highly strung and nervous, and he was impatient at the rather prolonged preliminaries. The fight was opened by both men manoeuvring for an opening. After a clinch, Stribling shot out a straight left, which flashed across to the Italian’s jaw. The referee had to interfere ill: two cliiirliOsi whereupon Stribling put'a right to thb-'-bbdy. Caritora breathing audibly, I 'missed with a left. The American’s' experience• outshone the Italian’s strength. It was Stribling’s round, ' . ' ' v ij'n the second round, Stribling IWfced'thc'i fighting, and' the mdh fell into ■ a clinch, of which Stribling had''the better.: After their 'being' separated." •Stribling landed' a right to the jaw.' Camera’s r;etnni. blow missed. Tii a' succeeding clinch, Camera whs inclined to liit oil the kidneys, and shouts arose that Camera was holding. hut Stribling forced the Italian to the ropes, and in the closing stages of the round Camera had to counter a force attack of lefts and rights. In the third round. Stribling was getting under Carnera s blows, thus making the Italian miss on several occasions. Camera was lumbering about like an elephant chasing a kangaroo. Tfe crowd was aroused to a great pitch when Stribling rushed in and floored the giant with'a right hook which rolled him on his hack,, hut Camera regained his feet. Thou the Italian rushed' in, ,and lie'right-hook-' etV the .Amerieanj anil Strihljhg’>as ; ■down .for eight. ..In the..opening of the lourtli round the contest came to its conclusion. This was when Stribling brought over liis left low down, and Camera fell to the floor, writhing. in agony, his great form rolling on the hoards. There was immediate pandemonium, with hoots and catcalls. Stribling looked most dejected. He walked to the ring centre, hut the referee waved him hack, and \vhcn order was re-* stored! he awarded the light to 'Carnera.
Stribling most" clearly- initnmsterod qho.’'fta, lin'll but whether lie.could have continued, to. withstand the terrible strain ‘ of the. twenty-,stbnef leaning heavily on him in the clinches is a problejln ..which the fight leaves unsolved:'
The ringside opinion is that Camera would biot stand the slenderest chance, against a really .clever" and quirk heavyweight boxer. He is -altogether too slow, and he 'relied most entirely upon his weight.
Camera’s comment in the dressing room was limited to “No good!” pointing significantly to the spot where lie was struck hv Stribling. Stribling protested that there was no foul. He said that when he struck low, Camera parried the blow, which went low. It was an accident. He did not mean it. and be felt fit and was sure that hut for the decision, lie could have given Camera a great fight, and perha-ps a great beating. | TWO FOUL BLOWS. The j referee, • after the fight,, stated, that two blows were struck, very loir, and be had-iio Option but to disqualify Striblijng. -. . :
