Alt- A. Ponsonb.v. Under Secretary for the Dominions, stated that a telegram had been received from the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia, Air J. 11. Scullin, stating that it had been decided to suspend for the present, the grant of assisted passages to Australia. Tie had received no communication on the subject from any of the Australian State Governments, but be would point out that, under the arrangements in force, the grant of p-ssages was a. matter for tin- Commonwealth and not one for Lite Slate Governments.
Alt Ponsonbv added: “I am satisfied that all parts of the British Empire. oversea are sympathetic t-> migration from this country, but the respective 'Governments must necessarily reserve their right to control the movement of assisted Migrants in accordance with the local economic conditions. The question of the suitability of various parts of the Empire for emigration from this country depends on many factors, which cannot bo discussed within the limits of answering a Parliamentary question.’’

“The spoonfed immigration from Great Britain to Canada is spoiling tlm settlers and it is ruining Canada’s opportunity of attracting the independent men who may come at their own expense,” declared Coione!
