CONFISCATED PETROL
MAGISTRATE’S DECISION UPHELD. CHRISTCHURCH, October 21.' When the fire occurred recently at an oil store in Carlyle 'Street, Sydenham, a large quantity of petrol which was salvaged from the fire was seized by Mr L. Hardie, chief inspector of dangerous goods tor the Cnnstchuireh City Lbunoil, This action was taken in pursuance of the authority conferred on the City Council by the. Dangerous Goods Actt in cases where the quantity of petrol stored is in excess of that permitted by the terms of the license issued by the council. Subsequently the firm, ivho traded under the name of the. South Island Trading Company, Were (prosecuted under the city by-law relating to the' i storage of 'dangerous goods and a conviction was entered against them. The Magistrate also made an order for the confiscation by the council of the petrol seized, subject to the appiOvail of the MVufier 'of Internal Affairs. It is understood that the Minister has now approved of the Magistrate’s decision ordering the confiscation oi the petrol.
