S.S. HIMITANGI
FIRE OUTBREAK WHILE IN DOCK. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 8. A fire occurred in the steamer Himitangi in the graving dock at Lyttelton this evening, but the outbreak was suppressed after two hours by the Fire Brigade. The alarm was given at 8 o’clock, but smoke had been issuing from the after hatch of the Hirnitangi for some time previously. When the Brigade arrived, the after hatch was afire, while dense smoke was pouring from the ventilators aft and amidships, which showed that the fire was burning strongly in the after hold. A consignment of forty bales of flax, shipped at Foxton for Wellington, had taken fire.
In less than an hour the fire was under control. The flax cafrgo was considerably damaged by fire and water hut the damage to the ship was almost negligible. The Hirnitangi damaged her rudder post last week in Foxton river, and was docked on Monday for repairs. The Hirnitangi was forme r]y the Coolebar, of 479 tons, and was purchased in Australia a few months ago. She is operated by the Holm Shipping Coy. of Wellington, running on the Lyttelton-Wellington-Wangan n and Foxton service.
