THE WESTLAND PRESBYTERY
The Presbytery met in the new hall of St. John’s Church, Greymouth,' yesterday. Present: Rev; 1 J.''' ; ;'W; : Hayward (Moderator); Rev* A. 'Mill- 1 er and Rev. T. N. Cuttle (Greymputh) aind Messrs Fotheringham. (Dennislon). Vickers (Kumarn) Rat-’ ,t.ray (Totara Flat), and W. Barrow-' man (Hokitika). : Revs,; A. 0. Whitelnw and H. G; Gilbert as visitors were v associated and Miss Shannon (voting women’s* travelling secretary) and Miss Hardio 1 of the Indian Mission, were present and addressed the Presbytery.
A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Rev. f.'eorr-.. T rv-h--r> who was a native of Westland and had boon much esteemed. • A;
In connection with the earthquake it was . rePorfod that damage to' the extent of £SOO hod Wn done- to march property and that the . Advisory Board had' issued an appeal to. the whole Church for that amount. '
Special applications for relief were m’' rl p < 1-v Reimistori and. . Granity which suffered ■ mrmnnent loss through the earthquake, and .these requests' were unanimously anp’royed. It was reported that the Rev. Professor HVyv.itson. (Moderator of. the General Assembly) would visit, Westland and would he *>+. Westport., on November 10th, Hokitika, November 17th. end Greymouth. V/wemher. 24th and that he would visit as many v places as possible between ..thespj,dates. . .Arrangements were, -ipa.de for the jubilee "of the .Westport Church, the.Moderator .of the . " .. ..... > j ; .V Reports showed (hH excellent results had been obtained by the Sun-. day Schools which had entered for the Assembly’s examination, ... A letter was received from the Public Questions Committee in reference.: to the much discussed divinity student "conscientious objector.” The Prenbvtery' decided to take no action in the matter. The date of the, meeting, of the Presbytery ' was altered to bring ' it into line with the altered date of the Assembly and it was decided to meet the first week in 'February and the \ first, week in August. *.. • Members of the Presbytery were’ .entertained at lunch by Mrs Cuttle, and the, Moderator and Mr Gilbert and Mr Fotheringham expressed thanks for the hospitality extended! A iarce gathering of ladies of the ' ' P.W.M.TT. was held in the afternoon when representatives of the recentlyformed Presbyterian Association/were present from all parts of the district; 1 Interesting addresses were given by - Miss Hardie (Foreign' Mission), and Miss Shannon (Youth Movement);’ ; u. -
