HOCKEY
A large crowd witnessed the hockey match in Greymouth yesterday between Mawhera and Hokitika ladies. The game was one of the best ever seen on the Park find from start to finish was a hard fight, in fact, so hard that five Hokitika girls were knocked out and three others hurt. Mawhera scored the first goal and later M. Sumner equalised for Hokitika with *a beautiful goal. Halftime was called with scores even. In the second half Mawhera scored again and Hokitika strove hard to equalize but were unlucky not to score on two or three occasions. The game ended with scores: Mawhera 2, Hokitika 1. The sixth day of the New Zealand Ladies Hockey Championship was played to-day in idlal, springlike weather, and before an attendance estimated at one thousand. The matches were keenly exciting, but there were no surprises. Results:— SECTION A. Ruahine beat Rotorua by two goals to nil. Southland beat Poverty Bay A by five goals to nil. Auckland A drew with South Canterbury, two goals each. . SECTION B. Eastern (Southland) defeated Poverty Bay B by six goals to nil. Wellington defeated Auckland B by thirteen goals to nil. Wairarapa drew with Hawke’s Bay one goal each. The section leaders now are: Section A: Ruahine and Southland five wins each, out of five games. Section B:—Wellington and Canterbury five wins each out of five games. To-morrow’s games will be particularly exciting, as section leaders will meet each other. Ruahine play Southland in the A section, and Canterbury play Wellington in the B. section. The winners will play off in the final on Friday.
