The first clay of the Marton spring meeting was held in boisterous weather. The track was holding arid the attendance was fair. The tote handled £13,768 against £16,183 for the one day meeting last year, and £16,580 on the first day in 1927. Results: — Trial Plate.—(2) Lucre 1, (6) KotaliieKa 2, (3) Austerity 3. Three lengths each way. Time 1.21 1-5. First Hack Hurdles.—(s) Hard Gold 1, (3)'Lady Gay 2, (6) Ah Wera 3. Won "by five lengths; one and a-half lengths. Time 2.59 2-5. Marton Handicap.—(l) Barometer 1, (2) Black Mint 2, (3) Gold Cure 3. Won by 100 yards; a furlong. Time 2.52.

Won by two and a-half lengths; one and a-half lengths. Time 1.22 2-5. GRANT OF THE PERMIT. WITH TAX REMISSIONS. WELLINGTON, September 4. Hon. Mr de la Perrelle has telegraphed approval of the holding of a trotting meeting at Dunedin on Saturday, October 26th, for earthquake relief. Both this meeting and the combined meeting to be held at Addington, will have a remission of the taxes. The whole of the profits are to be devoted to relief. < WESTPORT TROTTING CLUB. EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE. WESTPORT, September 8. Westport Trottirig Club’s damage by earthquake is set down at £373. It is hoped that relief will be afforded either out of trotting meetings held in different parts of the Dominion or from some other source. TUKI RETURNING. SYDNEY, Sept. 4. Tuki, which broke down at Randwick, is returning to New Zealand on Friday, accompanied by Red Jazz, which did not race here.
