LATE LOCALS.

An accident happened on the Kanieri Road this morning. Mr George Rowley, storekeeper of Harihari, was proceeding in his motor lorry, _ when apparently due to a sharp swerve causing the wheels to interlock, the lorry overturned on the road, the wheels being uppermost. The steering gear was smashed and other damage done to the lorry, and the contents weVe scattered about. Mr Rowley, who had several children in the lorry with him, suffered an injury to his hand,' and it is thought one finger will have to be amputated. ' One girl had her elbow rather badly injured, but the others escaped with bruises and shock.

A large number of Harihari residents turned out on Saturday night to attend an urgent meeting of the Harihari branch of the Medical Association ,there being a differen e of opinion between the local branch and the Matainui branch, as to where the doctor’s residence should he erected. Matainui people claim that it would he more central in their locality. It appears that the southern residents, when they found that they could not provide sufficient funds to support a doctor on their own, then came to Harihari residents to assist them in raising funds, and furthermore they agreeu that if the focal residents came into the Association, the medical man could reside at Harihari if he wished, providing they could provide a house for him to reside in, which was done. 'l'lie horse that tb« doctor is at present living iu is the vicar*'•

is required at - the end of this year for a new Minister. Now that a grant is forthcoming from the Government for a doctor’s residence, the Matainui residents hold that, if any residence is to he built, it should he at Matainui. The meeting decided on Saturday night that Matainui could have the house, also the doctor, as the neome here realise that they hold the balance of power, as the Matainui Association cannot support a medical man without outside assistance.
