TUNNEL DIFFICULTY
GREAT FLOW OF WATER.
PREVENTS WORK
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 30
In connection with the <lriving of the .big Tawa Flat tunnel, a snaft was sunk and headings commenced. This is in addition to the headings at tiie two exits.
The northern drive\of these two extra headings has so far proved fairly good g.oiind, but going south the hill has been so shaken up .by earthquakes of times past, that timoernig has been necessary right up to the face. '
To add to the difficulties!, a # subterranean lake or reservoir was on Tuesday night delivering a flow of twenty thousand gallons an hour. Three Cameron pumps have proved unable to ketep the water down; On Wednesday afternoon the water had completely filled the heading. The philips are working away chains under the water but it is only a question of time when the foot of the shaft will be flooded.
The grade is one in IST and the whole position is made very difficult underground. Streams of large dimensions are rare in this kind of work, but reservoirs much less, so it is considered that this is a reservoir. If the present pumps fail to get the water down extra pumps will be put on.
