A THEFT CHARGE
RINGING THE- CHANGES

The story of an attempt ,to ring the changes was told in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Vincent, Christie, ■ 45, pleaded guilty to stealing 10s from Edward Torrance, a shopkeeper. Accused went into the shop and ordered a soft drink. . .Fie. handed over a ten shilling note arid received 9s 8d change. Accused, then said he had change in silver, and asked ‘ for the note back. After fumbling in .his pocket for some time, Christie said that the shopkeeper had better made it a pound as he had more than he thought he had. A pound note was then handed over, but accused after more fumbling handed it back, saying he did not have the change after all
Christie then left the shop and -a few minutes after the shopkeeper found he had lost ten shillings. He followed accused; and gave ' Li™. ln charge. ’ *** Accusod / was to-day sentenced to three months. He had 22 previous convictions, including II in Australia.
