FIRE AT SEASIDE RESORT. (Australian Press Association) MELBOURNE, August 21. The largest guest house at the seaside resort, Lake’s Entrance, in Gippsland, conducted by Mr C. Broome, was burned early this morning. Several guests made their escape through windows or by lowering themselves by sheets' from the upper floor. Four men were slightly burned. A MAN’S THREAT. SYDNEY, August 22. The police fear that “The Gap” has claimed another victim. Last night a man visited Sydney hospital, craving to be given morphia, but this was refused him. Shouting, “ I’ll go over tlie gap,” lie disappeared. The man, who was an ex-soldier, was seen in a tram going to “The Gap.” A search will be made in tlie morning. CHILD ENDOWMENT TAX. (Received this day at 9.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 22. The child endowment tax is having such a serious effect on industry in New South Wales and has become such a burden that the State Cabinet has announced it will review the position at an early date. It is quite likely that a bill will be brought down next session to have the Act repealed. AUSTRALIAN IMPORTS. CANBERRA, August 22. Goods imported into Australia ifrom the United Kingdom, last year were valued a't approximately fifty-six millions sterling. Tho figures were the lowest for nine years. Imports from the United Stages amounting to about 35 millions sterling were about equal to the previous year. ‘ 1 The number of motor chassis brought into the Commonwealth last year totalled 99,000, of which United States supplied 66,000, Canada 23,000, United Kingdom 10,000.
