SUPER LAND TAX
DANNEVIRKE FARMERS’ VIEWS

DANNEVIRKE, August 15
The'-Budget taxation proposals were discussed at a meeting of farmers heie to-day, convened by the Farmers Union. About 25 were present. V arious views were expressed some being antagonistic to proposals, while others were in approval of the super tax, and some others maintained the farmer between the big and little would bear the brunt.
A motion was passed recommending that tlie-mortgage exemption be retained £IO,OOO and another that provision be blade for giving those on whom the taxation bears too heavily the option to, appear before some tribunal with the Commissioner of Taxes as Chairman, such tribunal to have power, if necessary, in cases of hardship to afford relief.
FARMERS WANT RETRENCHMENT
DUNEDIN, August 15
A strong protest against the proposed scheme of increased taxation, both in regard to the customs tax and ’the super land tax, was voiced at a meeting of the Farmers’ Union td-day. • A remit was passed urging on the Government the necessity off eliminating'the deficit in the Budget by reducing the expenditure in the Government departments. The‘ ’mover of the remit was Mr E. H. Idurney.' He stressed .as being, alarming the rate at which national expenditure was increasing. He said the principle of increased taxation at this juncture of the country’s career was a}\ wrong. , . , ■!/' p.j l ! The’ super tax on land was also made the subject of a remit protesting against its imposition until a scheme of land classification were adopted ‘to facilitate the cutting up of the large properties for closer settlement. A further remit w r as carried unanimously in which the Dominion President (Mr W. J. Poison), in view of a statement made by him in the Hbu c on the tariff question, was asked to bring f the Union point of view before Parliament, the ; point of view' being contained in two remits passed by the DonJihioU Conference. 1 one of these urgitig : a steady reduction in Customs tariffs, and the other asking that no alteration in customs tariffs be made until the wdiole question was reviewed by a! competent tribunal, not a Ministerial of Parliamentary , Committee, but a body of independent authorities.,-
