STEWARD CAUGHT
WITH OPIUM WORTH £IBO. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August .13. A ship’s steward, Charles Dunstan, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon with having imported prepared opium into the Dominion. He pleaded guilty. The Collector of Customs sa:d the accused was on the Malieno, which arrived from Sydney this morning. Just before midday Dunstan >was seen walking up the wharf wearing an overcoat, aimong a i number of waterside workers. A Customs Officer, Mr Galley, became susipicous of the man and suggested' that he had something concealed under his coat. On searching Dunstan, Mr Galley found a number of tins of opium of an approximate value of £IBO. Ihe accused was fined £l2, and an order was made for the confiscation of the opium.. The default of paying his fine, the accused would undergo three mtonths’ imprisonment.
