WAIRARAPA BEATS AUCKLAND

The weather was tight and sriripy for Ranfurly Shield challenge match, Auckland v. Wairarajrii. The attendance numbered 7000. Following were the teains:—Auckland—Butler, Lricas, Busjli. Mirins, Oariimick, Jariiiesbn, Corrier, L. .Hook-, Hadley, Finlayson, Anderson, Batty, A. Khijgllt, Cath'qrift, L. Kiiight.
Wairarapa L. Rorifcll, Randal Booth, Sttirigfellow, Filter, Cooke, Gundy, J. Mill, J. Donald, W. lyviiie, K. Reid, I. HarVey, S. WilIbughby, M. Willoughby, N. McGrtegor, S. Oliver. The Auckland tearri included eight international players, and the Wairarapa team nine. The referee wps Mr H. Whittington (TaVanaki).
Auckland kicked off Against a very slight wind, the forwards setting up a frist pace. Wairarapa held them nicely, and Cooke, from a free-kick from infield, lined near the corner. The Auckland forwards returned play infield, where Roach, the Wairarapa full-back, was tackled heavily after getting rid of the ball, arid was knocked out. He recovered and ivept on. A good rush by Auckland was checked by Siririgfejlow marking. Play went bn Ofttsido the Auckland twenty-five. There was tricky work ih the scrum, arid Wairarapa were riwarded a free-kick. Fuller just missed. Ten' ininutes later ih the Wairarapa twenty-five, a similar infringement occurred. Bush missed with the kick; 4»lriy began to liven ftp, ifoth packs putting great , vigopr into the gairie, brit neither reaping ftny benefit. Mill arid Cooke were associated in pretty play, bftt Bugler came through nicely and relieved. A further attacks was led by Stringfellow, but Brish stopped it. Minns picked up, rah round behind the goal and lined at the twenty-five flag. With Wairarapa still attacking, off-side play in the .Auckland pack'gave Fuller another chance, which he goaled from oritside tfie twenty-five. ; A triiriftte later, outside the Waifarajpit twenty-five, Oliver was offside and Bush had an excellent 'opportunity to everi, but missed narrowly. WairalApri set up a period of hot attack, but Auckland clef ended their goal line stubbornly till, by a lucky speculator, L. Hook relieved. Shocking inishamtlirig by the WriirarApa backs let the visiting forwards through to inside the twenty-five but a to'o hard kick allowed Roach to force. Fine play by Minns carried p'iay to tlie Wairarapa twenty-five, where Olliver again was off-side and Bush again rilissed. From a scrum inside the Auckland half, C ; undy received from Mill and sent on to Cooke, but Corner picked up and sent to Gammick, wlib rah well and passed irifield to Bush. Auckland kept up the pressure, but WaifiirapA defended solidly. Mi|ll sent Donald and oui»dy .nivay, but the latter jseht a wijd pass to Booth, wjVo missed. Bitty was caught playing the ball on the ground. Fuller goaled with a splendid kick. Wairarapa 6, Auckland 5.
During the first spell the attendance increased approximately to 9000 aiid the wind dropped to a perfect calm. Auckland stai-ted off tlie . second spell with a yery fine passing rush the ball travelling from hand tb hand airibiig both forwards and backs, only to be hold UP on the line. Dohald relieved from a scrum, but the pressure returned. There was a series of scrums in the Wairarapa twenty-five, the advantage varying. Cooke sent oiit a long kick from a ruck. Minns received and put in a lightning run. down the line but put his foot into touch. Wairarapa rallied and drove Auckland to their twenty-five, where - after a hot period a free kick for offside gave Batty an opportunity for a fine line kick. R, Booth broke away in midfield, but Jamieson floored him quickly. Oundy also broke away, but the tackling was too solid. Give and take kicking followed, the final advantage lying with Auckjjahyd.. Hard, tight play followed and Cooke lined beautifully in the Auckland twenty-five. A prompt throw in saw Reid received and send oh to. Harvey to Irvine, who scored under the posts. Fuller goaled. AV airarapa 11, Auckland 5.
Auckland vigorously returned to the attack, and a smart movement found play right on the WairarapA 'liine.. Lucajs, within .yards <of tho line, punted. Roaqh marked and relieved. Cammick was slightly hurt;. Mid-ftsld play followed/ Auckland making every effort to pierce the defence. Gundy skied a high one and Butler made his first mistake. M. Willoughby carried on from a scrum, and a hpt melee in tlie Auckland twenty-five Corner holding ort the ground. Fuller goaled easily. Wairarapa 14, Auckland 5. In line-out work Auckland were proving superior, and thrust followed thrust in the Wairarapa twentyfive, only to meet stubborn, effective defence. Both sets of forwards were tiring, and Corner set his backs going time and time again, sometimes gaining ground, hut more often i mining cross-field. From a rpek outside the WairarapA twenty-five the ball was kicked to Roach, who miss? ed. L. Hook kicked hard past him and raced Fuller to touch down.

Wairarapa immediately carried play to the Auckland twenty-five. A sturdy ruck by the. Auckland forwards carried play inside the Wairarapa half, where off-side play gave Butlei a fine chance, but lie missed trie post by a yaid. From the Auckland, twenty-five, frantic dribbling deceived Roach, and Lucas picked up and raced away. Fuller overtook him a yard from trie line and brought him down. Lucas rolled over and touched down a yarid from the post at the corner. He took tlve kick himself.' The ball hit trie post and rebounded infield. Wairarapa 14, Auckland 11.
