SUGAR TOO DEAR
VICTORIAN- AGITATION. (AU&tfaliah Press Association.) MELBOURNE, Aiigiist 12. An organisation, called the Town and Couhtiry Union, lias launched a campaign in favour of the Removal ojf the embargo'oh JAva sugar, owing tp the high pride of Australian sugar. It is claimed that while Australian sugar costs the consumers £36 10s per ton Java white sugai- could be landed at £lO. 10s per ton. The com sequence is that Australia is paying seven millions sterling annually more than she should pay simply in the interests of the home-grown article; which is now getting into the hands of Southern Europeans. The Union describes this penalty as enpfmbiis, and a ntjmW of rbpro? tentative public bodies have promised to help the campaign.
