ASHBURTON’S FUND. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] ASHBURTON, August 10. The “Ashburton Guardian’s” earthquake relief fund has been closed arid the total amount collected, L 1,661, lemitted to Wellington. This sum together with various smaller funds subscribed in the district, brings the total contribution from Ashburton County up to over £2,292. WOMAN KILLED. ( BY MOTOR CAR. WELLINGTON, August 11. On Saturday night, Mrs Florence Alton, aged 63 years, of Upper Hutt, while walking home on the side of the bitumen, was knocked down and killed by a motor car driven by Frederick Charles Pacer. The car swerved out from behind another car to pass it. CARS DROPS FORTY FEET. TWO PERSONS HURT. - WELLINGTON, August 11. On Saturday night, shortly after seven o’clock, a rriotor car, driven by J 7 Sines, accompanied by Mrs S. Robertson as. a passenger, went over a 40foot bank at Karon, Both occupants sustained severe concussion and shock, and are at present in the hospital in a serious condition.
TRAM ACCIDENT. AUCKLAND, August 10. A woman, Mrs Bermard, of an age between 60 and 70, when stepping off a safety zone in Queen Street at : ipid-' day, was caught between two trams. She sustained a compound fracture of the right leg. She is now in the hospital and has not regained consciousness. Her condition is critical. KILLED BY MOTOR OAR. WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. ' Ari inquest to-day was held on the death of Thomas George White, who was killed by an explosion at a Public ■ Works camp. A verdict was. returned that the deceased died of injuries received through a premature explosion when preparing a hole for a blast, no blame being attachable to anyone. i ; ‘ "IDLE' AND v DISORDERLY. ' ’ MAN NEGLECTS HIS HORSE. INVERCARGILL, August 10. In' the Police Court yesterday, •Thomas Hussey was charged with ,being the owner of a horse and failing to supply it with adequate food; He pleaded guilty, and elected to be dealt with summarily. Senior Sergeant Fox said that Hussey fyad tied ;his horsb ’ ii|p in a section in' Spey Street fb’r several days and it had remained there until the Police collected it I 'on Friday morning. Hussey had bought it sixpence worth of chaff; which was all that it had had during that time. He then went away and bought a keg of beer and got drunk. Hussey was more or less of a nuisance in the town and he and his horse created a great deal of attention. The Senior Sergeant thought that a term of ihiprisonment should be imposed. He : contended that Hussey was not fit to' be at large. He made no honest effort to obtain Work. The- Magistrate sentenced Hussey to one month’s imprisonments DEATH UNDEIR ANAESTHETIC. TI3MARU, August 10..' '' " At' the inquest on the child, Ngaio Coutts McGregor, who died under an anaesthetic while undergoing an operation, the Coroner returned a. verdict •according to the medical . evidence:, and expressed the opinion that every care had been taken, that the operation was necessary, and that the child was suffering from a toxic condition which could not have been discovered by the usual careful examination. CASE DISMISSED. WELLINGTON, August 10. In reserved judgment to-day, Magistrate Page dismissed the case against a bookseller in regard to the book, Marie Stopes “Enduring Passion.”
