Mr Herb Smith, who arrived at Westport from Nelson via Maruia on Saturday, stated an engineer’s estimate of the quantity of material thrown from tho mountain across the Matakitaki river was 184,000.090 square yards. At 2s 6d. a yard, it would cost £23,093,000 to remove, but some process by which it could he removed more cheaply could he devised. One side of the mountain was flung across the Matakitaki overwhelming three members of the Busch family and the other side over the Maruia, overwhelming two members of the Gibson family and Miss Fergusson. Only a pinnacle was left standing.
