FISHING BOAT DECISION

OWNER FINED. By Teleg.aph—Per Press Association PALMERSTON N., July 23. Recently the Marine Department proceeded against James Johnston and Maurice Field, charging the owner and master respectively of the ship Viking, that not exceeding six tons register, and propelled by gas, did unlawfully carry passengers to sea for hire, without a duly certificated master or engineer. A further charge was made against Johnston, as owner of the vessel, for plying on navigable water between Paraparaumu and Kapiti without a valid certificate of survey.

Giving his reserved judgment, Mr Stout, S.M., said there was no doubt fishing boats which, as such, were exempt from the provisions of survey in the Shipping Marine Act, as to carrying duly certificated master or engineer, in the amending. Act must comply with the provisions if they hire their boats out to fishing or picnic parties. Fines were inflicted on the defendants.
