RAIDS ON BOOKIES

THIRTEEN ARRESTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association). NEW PLYMOUTH, July 14.; Raids on premises allegedly to be used by bookmakers were carried out by the police simultaneously in the four chief Taranaki towns on Saturday,. Thirteen arrests n'tve made, eleven being of alleged bookmakers or Keepers of common gaming houses, and two o' persons alleged to have been found in common gaming houses. it was the final day of the Wellington races. Later in the day the accused men were brought before Justices in the respective towns and remanded ou hail. Sums, of money found on the various accused were impounded, pending the U’ial. '1 lie arrested men are: Herbert Thomas Allen, John Allen, Robert Mascull, George McGlaslian, John Shore, Oscar Roycc blander (all of New Plymouth) charged with hookmaking. At Stratford, Dominick Sissasich was arrested for allegedly using the Broadway Restaurant as a common gaming house.

Arrested at Eltliam was Antonio Novak, restaurant keeper, an alleged bookmaker. Arrested at Hawera were Herbert Allen, billiard saloon keeper; Thomas Henderson Teesdale, tea-room keeper, both for alleged book making and keeping gaming houses; also William Elder, allegedly assisting Teesdale. Edward Lavery and Thomas Conneil were allegedly found in a common gaming .louse.
