Wilford was present. Mr H. E. Holland said he considered it a most deplorable thing that the religious convictions of boys were not i being recognised,-that they were being put in prison and deprived of civil . rights for ten years. It was too late in the history of the world to take up the attitude that men should be penalised for religious convictions. Mr W....E. .Barnard said the law placed rather a severe burden bn magistrates in asking them to judge a man’s conscience. Asked if a warrant for. the arrest of the boys could not be field over, the Minister of Justice said he had no power to do that. r ; 1 Mr Holland—Somebody must have the power. Mr W. J. Jordan asked if the Gover-nor-General could not be asked to exeroise his power. Sir Joseph Ward—A day or two won’t hurt the boys. > Mr Jordan remarked it would have been better if Wednesday’s deputation had gone to Sir Joseph Ward in the first place. Sir Joseph Ward replied it migld have been better if he had been present at the first deputation.
