HANCOCK BEATS PURDY. NEW ZEALANDER, KNOCKED ' OUT IN 12th. ROUND. (Australian Press Association) (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 12. At the Leichardt Stadium to-night for the welter championship Australia, Wally HTancock 10.(holder) knocked out Charlie Purdy (N.Z.) the challenger in the 12th. round. The fight was exciting, in some respects sensational. Encounters with Hancock are always dangerous. Purdy began caul iously. Hancock' was confident, but Purdy warmed up to the task in the third found, and although lie took a lot of;punishment ho himself gave a goodly measure. Hancock used his left freely and wildly, often connecting with Purdy’s chin and nose. During the fifth round the New Zealander was gioggy and similarly in eighth. Purdy, however, managed to recover and sent in some telling blows to his opponent’s face and body. Hancock in the tenth round continued to attack, but found Purdy, who crouched low, most elusive. Blood was flowing from both men’s faces. It was indeed a bloodthirsty contest. Purdy was obviously tired when he was floored in the 12th. found.’ '
