“ THE HEART OF MARYLAND ”
-TO-NIGHT.
At the Princess Theatre to-night % f \ Master Pictures present Dolores Costello in “The Heart of Maryland,” from the play by David Belasco. The scenario is by Graham Baker and the picture wns directed by Lloyd Bacon. Had Dolores Costello not already at- / tained the heights of fame, her perr 'formance in “The Heart of Maryland” would place <• her there. She possesses l not only exquisite beauty but real in- > torpretive genius, swaying her audiences at will. Better even than her -V characterisations : in u The Sea Beast,” ■V When a Man; Loves,” “ The Third Degree,” “A Million Bid,” and- “ Old San F.rancisco,”. is her portrayal of the heroine of “ The Heart'of Maryland.” [This world knows “ The Heart of Maryland,” and that it brought dazzling success to Mrs Leslie Carter, thirty ..iyears ago. It has had many revivals, and always successful ones. Audiences a hundred years from now will, in all possibility, ■ thrill at the perils and loves of Maryland Calvert as avidly as they do to-day. There is an immortal something about the great Belasco play, and Warner .Bros, have presented it in . a setting of marvellous beauty, and they’have scared no effort- in 'getting the best cast obtainable. Among / the many j hisotric . figures of- the time 7 Lee;. Grant.'i-’i Highlights of the production include the Lincoln Inaugui&lv IJnIJ j: the, exciting capture of Maryland’s,brother.; the mo- , ment when the aged General is forced to sign the death warrant of his own son; the, shelling of Boonesboro; the scene in which Maryland swings in mid-air from the clapper of the great : bell: that the signal fof' her - lover’s execution may not be given; others in which the Southern drummer-boy figures; and the. sequence in which Maryland, accused of treachery, falls before the firing squad. “ The Heart of Maryland ” is a credit to Warner Bros., wi'll-kvown for splendid productions. and ;f adds many a gem to the already g'ttering crown of Dolores Costello.
