LICENSEE FINED. FOR ALLOWING DRUNKENNESS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 30. R.. A. Alhvood, licensee of the Shorthand Hotel, was' recently chnrged allowing drunkenness on his premises, decision lieing. reserved. The Magistrate, in giving judgment to-day, said that the Court could not believe the story told by* the licensee in the wit-ness-box. The Court accepted .the constable’s evidence. AJhvood would bo convicted and would be lined £6 and costs. There was a strong inference that the licensee was supplying a man with liquor<hvhile he was drunk, but the evidence was not sufficient to justify a conviction on that charge. KILLED BY TRAIN. WELLINGTON, July T. Henry Bodley, of 207, Grant Road, Wellington, a well-known figure in the milk business locally, was killed by train at Paekakariki last night. He was a passenger from Ohau by the Sunday excursion train and apparently stepped off as it entered Paekakilriki station at 6.40 p.m. and fell beneath the wheels. NASTY ACCIDENT. PALMERSTON N., July 1. .Logan Atkinson, a farmer, of Mako Mako, was the victim of a serious accident while out pig shooting on the Pahiatua track yesterday with a party of four. A loaded gun was .left hidden in the bush and while retrieVing it later Atkinson grasped it by the muzzle and the weapon discharged shattering his left forearm, which was amputated at the Palmerston Hospital. . LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN. ■x : HAWERA, July 1. At the annual conference of the New Zealand command of Legion of Frontiersmen, ' attended by 30 delegates on Saturday, Commandant C. H. Weston, D. 5.0., of New Plymouth, presiding, it was N stated in the report that the Legion was making good progress' in New Zealand. He appealed for the formation of further troops. • Several remits Iwere considered dealing until the Legion organisation. A remarkable scene of enthusiasm attended the election of the Commandant for, the ensuing term. ? . 0 Colonel Weston retired when nominations were asked and the gathering immediaely rose calling Colonel Weston in unison. His re-election unopposed was carried with cheers. SHAG POINT COAL MINE. • DUNEDIN, July 1. At a conference between the liquidators and representatives of the workers at Shag Point coal mine, a liquidator pointed out no offer for the mine as a going' concern was likely until a working agreement was come to. The delegates of the workers \ eventually consented to the making of a new agreement identical in the old agreement for a term of two years. When .the agreement is completed the liquidators will endeavour to raise capital for the, formation of a new company. , ,' * COMMISSIONER* OF PENSIONS. WELLINGTON, July 1. The Public Service Commissioner (Mr Verschaffelt) announces the appointment of Mr J. LI. Boyes as Commissioner of Pensions, made vacant by the retirement of Mr Fache. Mr Boyes has been Assistant Commissioner since 1919.
