A PROTEST NEEDED
AMERICAN TARIFF ON NEW ZEALAND GOODS. HASTINGS, June 18. At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr J. S. M’Leod. ...e president, in an address, referred to the hesitation of pepple to invest, and to the presence of much unemployment- when hanks and individuals had plenty of money. He said that the taxation of 4s 6d in the f) on industries might he responsible for investors’ hesitancy. Referring to the American high tariff against Dominion goods, Mr McLeod said that New Zealand could not take too serious a view of this treatment, which would continue unless Chambers of Commerce organised against it. American cars were imported to New Zealand in great numbers. when trade between New Zealand and Britain should he encouraged, especially as British cars were move economical in tue end. He quoted figures showing the great prosperity of Canada and South Africa, asking why wo had not the ability here to maintain similar conditions.
