GENERAL CABLES

AFRICAN AFFRAY

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright)

CAPETOWN, June 18

Four natives were killed and forty injured, and one hundred arrested, in the disturbance, cabled last night, when an old saddler was battered to death. Whites retaliated with revolvers. LONDON, June 18. Ponsonby succeeds Lovat. MACDONALD-DAWES SPEECH. PA IMS COM M ENTS., (Received this day at 8 n.m.) LONDON, June 20. The Paris press gives prominence to the AiacDonald-Oawes speech. M. Pertinax in “ L’Eclio de Paris,” ridicules the spectacle of two pontiffs exchanging inflated phrases and adds we gather from all this flow of words the United States is asking Britain to give up the supremacy of battle-cruisers on the understanding that Britain obtains all the small cruisers necessary to police her trade routes. PROMINENT MAN’S HEATH. (Received this day at 8 a.in.) LONDON, June 19. Obituary.—Serjulian Ordc, for twenty years secretary of the Royal Automobile Club. He was prominent for hospitality to Dominion officers in wartime. EXPRESS NEWSPAPER COY. : SHARE GIVEN. LONDON, June 20. Lord B.eaverbrook has given his elder son, William Maxwell Aitken, a controlling share interest in the London “ Express ” Newspaper Company. EAR II TNCHCAPE. LONDON, June 19. Lord Inchcnpe/has taken the title of Earl Inchcape, and his son Kenneth the title of Viscount Glenapp. MR. MACDONALD. VISIT TO AMERICA. LONDON, June T 9. It is rather surprisingly hinted- in official circles that Premier MacDonald’s Washington visit may not merely he delayed but possibly and indefinitely deferred, says the ‘‘Daily Herald’s” political correspondent. It is now made fairly clear that Mr MacDonald is now likely to desire a naval agreement to be reached before making the trip, in which case it naturally will not bo the August parliamentary recess as hoped. The imminence of the visit was taken foi granted, but actually it has not been finally arranged. No mention of a invitation so far appears in General Dawes’ utterances here.

CAPE CABINET. , % CAPETOWN, June 19. . General Hertzog has now reconstituted his Cabinet. The only changes are Pi row (Transvaal Advocate) takes Tielman Roos’ place as Minister of Justice, Boos having insisted on resigning owing to the state of Ills health. Jatsen (ex-Speaker) joins Cabinet as Minister of Native Affaiis relieving Hertzog of that capacity. GENERAL DAWES. LONDON, Jpne 19. The press welcomes General Dawes’ frankness. The “Daily Telegraph” says British opinion is -undoubtedly approved. Dawe’s proposals are agieeable to the commonsense policy supported by experience. The “Morning Post” says we arc particularly grateful to General Dawes for realising the British, as well as the American viewpoint. If there is nothing definite at present, there is at least goodwill on both sides. SINGER INDISPOSED. LONDON, June 19. Like his compatriot, Miss Florence Austral, Browning Mummery unfortunately developed ear trouble, preventing the singing of Rudolfo’s “La Boheme ” at Covent Garden.
