A FIRE
(I'Jv Telegraph—i’er l*ress Association.) DAItGAViUJfi, May 17. There was a spectacular lire at Tekopuru late last night, which totally destroyed a large general store and the contents, owned and occupied hy C. H. Ausctt. The owner was working at his books till 10.30 and when ii.ling a kerosene heater, it caught lire, and immediately the whole room was alight. Aukett made a desperate attempt to put the lire out, and also telephoned for assistance. A young man named C. Huge, the lirst one on the scene, found Aukett unconscious on the floor, and had great difficulty in getting him out. It was afterwards found that Aukett lmd sustained injuries to his head and arms which required medical attention. There is no water supply, and the fire burned merrily til! hardly a vestige was left of the largest store : the district. A bucket brigade did good work, and were the means of saving fhe buildings on either side. The safe was opened to-day and the contents wore found to hb intact. Aukett is a. verv heavy loser. The stock was insured lor £I3OO, and the bui'ding for £IOO. both in the Victorian Office. The owner estimates his loss above the insurance at £3OOO.
