AUCKLAND, May 8., It is announced that owing to temporary stoppage of the lubricating system, two of the hearings in the port semi-diesel engine on the Government Island motor ship, “Maui Poinare,” became heated, and the metal melted. It therefore became necessary to stop the engine twice during the trip from Wellington to Auckland, so as to allow the. metal to cool, the vessel continuing her way under the second engine. It will now be necessary to re-metal the bearings, a task which will 1m? carried out while the vessel lies at the King’s Wharf. When the ship arrived to-day from Wellington, Lloyd’s inspector and representatives of the Marine Department, boarded the vessel, and made an inspection of her machinery. It transpired that the engine trouble developed on the voyage up the coast, and in order to effect repairs, the vessel will be held up at Auckland for a fortnight. The Maui Pornaro was scheduled to sail on Saturday with passengers, mails, and cargo for Norfolk Island, luit her departure is now announced for Thursday. May 23rd.
