RETRENCHMENT PROPOSALS. v ßy Telegraph—press Association). AUCKLAND, May 5. A rumour that there is a possibility of a tramway strike here is authoritatively denied. It had been suggested that a strike might evolve as a protest against a pronouncement by the Chairman of the Tramway Board that efficiency in the service was to be the paramount consideration when retrenchment wa.s '.under review and that tlie establishment of the system, of appointment and relegation by seniority was to lie abolished. .A I ass meetings of tlie tramwaymen will bo held oil Thursday next, but it is denied ‘by their representatives that there is anything in tlie suggestion concerning a strike. The meetings, they state, are being called to discuss amongst other matters, the attitude ol the tramway management in re*ird. to retrenchment, particularly as it ap .plies to seniority. The Transport Board has agreed to meet the Union representatives on Tuesday to discuss the agreement to he submitted by the Union.
