THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

“I’M NOT CLEVER.” “it is often of value to one,” a French philosopher prote, “to know that one is not clever.” That is certainly true, but there is such a defect as being too conscious of one’s lack of cleverness. Far more people fail through being afraid to attempt things than through being over-ready to attempt them. If you think your self cleverer than you are, you may have to undergo humiliation, you may slip and fall. But yolir very confidence in yourself makes others believe in you. If you live and learn you end by succeeding. But to say, “I know; I’m stupid. T can’t do what the clever ones can do,” is to write yourself down a ]ioor creature from the start.
