Evans, of Tainui Street, | Greymouth. Deceased, who was a na-' tivc of Nelson, was about Go years of age. She is survived by her husband, one daughter (Mrs J. Stenhouse, of Christchurch) and three sons (Messrs W. Evans, of the Post and Telegraph Department, Greymouth; S. Evans, of Christchurch; and A. Evans, of Sydney). During the term holidays, which start on" May 10th, refresher classes 'V teachers will he held in Christchurch, Tiraaru, and Greymouth. Unfortunately his command of the English language was far from perfect, and in his excitement the word “ fight ” was interpreted as “ fire.” The alarm was duly given and soon there were heard the hoot of sirens and two bands of (ire-fighters came rushing to the seeing of the supposed lire, while Irom the other direction came three or four nolice constables. The Fire Brigade looked for the fire, but failed to find it. All they got were explanations —very incoherent —which amused no one hut a band of Hindus who apparently thought that it was the joke of the season. A meeting has boon convened at ‘VelliiieCon on the 14th insfc by the New Zealand Trotting C nference to consider the matter of trotting Handicaps. Mr 1). J. Evans has been invited to attend and take part in the meeting.
On Monday at Arahura after the conclusion of the lat stock sales, Messrs W. Jeffries and Co. will hold a special sale on behalf of the Commissioner of Crown Lands of 18 cows and heifers and other stock and a quantity of farm implements.
The special attraction on 'Wednesday night next will be the Swimming Club’s bail in the Soldiers’ Hall. This special fixture always proves an attractive one, and very complete arrangements are being made. Music will he provided by the Christie Orchestra, the floor perfect, and the Ladies’ Committee are arranging a dainty supper.
Mr E. A. Wells, who is a candidate for the Central Riding, in the-present County Election, has a short addiess to the electors in this issue. Mr Wells has represented the district for many years, and is the retiring County Chairman. His term of ‘office has been a very useful one, and rendered specially notable because of the wiping out of the hank overdraft at the end of the financial year. Ale W ells has proved an attentive member to Ins duties, and his record should bo such ns to commend hi in very generally to the electors on Wednesday.

An accident occurred on the Black water Sawmill Company’s bush tram cm Tuesday. The hush tractor was drawing a load of logs to the mill, am when ascending a one in six grade a king-pin in one of the bogies N broke causing the logs to get clear and slide over the tractor, taking off all th-r-abin and mountings with them. Ow ing to the line giving way, the tractor got side ways on, and rolled over, the load of logs falling on top of it. Tic manager of the sawmill (Mr T. A i> sirred) was driving a tractor behind to brake the loaded bogies as. they came clown the incline, and narrowly averted a serious accident to himsoll. After two hours work the damaged tractor was replaced on the tram line, when ail examination disclosed that about E7O worth of damage had been done.
