AN ATTEMPT
TO DERAIL .A TRAIN. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., May 2. . An attempt was made last night to derail a train from AA r ollington, known as the fields express by placing fish plates and sleepers across the rails near Longburn. A sleeper was placed slant-wise between the raiS ivith a fish plate at either end to ride the wheels off the metal, but a traffic inspector alter visiting the scene considers the obstruction could not possibly effect a derailment. Prior to the time a train was due at Longburn, a porter observed two men on the permanent way. Considering they „ere in danger lie went to warn them and found the men had loft, and then discovered the sleeper with fish plates on the line. The train Was then only a short distance away. The driver was .signalled and the train, stopped, after a slight impact with the obstruction.
