• There were two more brutal assaults on the timber workers last night. A loyal worker was set on by nine men at Redfern, thrown to the ground and savagely kicked about the head and body. The man alleged he was previously threatened with murder if he continued working. A second attack occurred at Annandale. John Gordon was kicked unconscious by two masked men who made off in a waiting car.

SYDNEY, March 28. Following the burning of the ballot papers which were placed in a kerosene soaked bag and set on fire, in defiance to the warnings of the Federal authorities and police, ’ an effigy of Justice Lukin was tied tc a tree in Hyde Park and burned, In a riot which followed revolvers were drawn and batons were used by a body of police in an effort’ to quell the maddened rush. Hundreds of men rioters threatened to overwhelm the police who were fighting desperately. They eventually succeeded in getting clear of the angry mob. and at the same time arresting seven men u*o ' | ere charged with riotous behaviour. Several police r§ </jpu nch - ed about the face. ’ 1 ‘ It is estimated fifty thousand witnessed the burning episode. The scenes were unprecedented in the history of Australian trade unionism. '
