A LABOUR MEMBER, MR JORDON’S ATTITUDE. (By Telegraph-Press Association). AUCKLAND, March 1 A frank statement of his attitude to the United Party was made by Mr W. Jordan, Labour member for Manukau, in a speech at Ellerslie last night when he referred to the fact that his name had been mentioned as one of tho.few dissatisfied Labour members. He said that ho knew of nothing tending toward a split in the party, but it was his intention to help the Government to carry out its promised programme. ‘‘lf there is to be a change in the leadership or chairmanship of the Labour Party,” he continued, “that does not mean the breaking up of the party.” The United Party had set out with a sincere desire to improve the condition of the people in the Dom minion, and so long as its efforts in this direction were carried on it would receive his support, BYE-ELECTION. WELLINGTON, March 4. The Minister in Charge of the Electoral Department announces the date of;the bye-election for the Bay of Islands as 10th April. The writ will be issued on Bth March, nominations close on 27th and the writ is returnable on 17th April. THEFT CHARGE. AUCKLAND, March 4. Bartholomew Mclroy, descrilied as a seaman and labourer, aged 21, came before Air Levin, S.M., at the Police Court and was charged with the theft of a suit case valued at £4. and six hundred cooks dollar coupons of a total value of £l4O, the property of a seaman, Herman Gronin, and also the theft off a motor car valued at £350, two gramophones £23, overcoat and gold' watch. He was also called upon to answer four charges of theft of Post Office Savings Bank withdrawal slips and the theft of £475 in money. McTlroy had been placed on probation three weeks ago. He went to stay at a boardinghouse where Gronin stayed. He stole 600 dollars, also bank notes and a bank hook, drawing sums therefrom at close dates, totalling £475. A watch and chain were stolen from a Union Company’s steam, er in port and a motor car which he sold to a grocer at Wade for £IOO cash. He lost all but £lB of this money .at the races. Within one month he squandered seven hundred pounds in gamblirig and racing. He had no money left. On one of four summary charges accused was sentenced to one year’s reformative detention and on indict- , able charges, to which he pleaded guilty, he was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
