HOPE FOR COAL
SHIPOWNERS’ MOVE. United Press Association-rßy Electric Telegraph—Copyright). LONDON, February 25. The “Daily Telegraph ” states: The shipowners arc keenly interested.in the pulverised coal system, which, has emerged, from' the experimental stage.Pulverised coal is recognised as being a formidable rival to lump coal, and it will jxissibly prove a substitute for oil. Such excellent results have Keen obtained on the steamer Hororata (which arrived in Wellington, N.Z., recently) and her/owners have decided to conveit all of her boilers for use of powdered fuel. The Blue Star line is similarly fitting up the “ Stuart Star.” If this system comes into general use in the meicantile marine, the coal industry will benefit enormously. Britain’s more than forty million pounds worth of oil imports yearly should be correspondingly reduced. It is understood to be likely that powdered fuel will he used in the navy also. The Admiralty has lent two vessels to make experiments with powdered coal.
