OBSTETRIC HOSPITAL

ADJUNCT TO MEDICAL SCHOOL

DUNEDIN, February 25

Commenting editorially on the representations which the medical graduates of New Zealand have decided to make to the Government respecting improved, faciities for midwifery training, the “Otago Daily Times” urges that it is in. the interests of the Dominion as a whole that the Otago Medical School should be made as efficient as possible. Proceeding, the article says:— “It is especially in the interests of the women of the Dominion, who are to, be the mothers of future generations. that the training of her medical students should be so thorough in the important subject of obstetrics as to afford them cause for impicit confidence in the New Zealand graduates. The difficulties that have been encountered in the past would in large measure be overcome if an obstetric hospital wore made an adjunct of the Medical school, and it is sure-lv clear that there should be such an adjunct to the School. The University Council last week sidontod a'-recommendation for the establishment of a chair of Midwifery, and lias thus definitely organised a department of obstetrics in connexion with the Medical School. Thestablishment of an obstetrics hospital would place this department upon the footing which it slioud occupy in a national school of medicine.”
