A BREAKDOWN

IN SOUTH ELECTRIC SUPPLY. By Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 20. The most serious breakdown in the history of the Southland Electric Power Board occurred shortly before eight o’clock to-night, when the light and power services were out of commission till 9.30. The theatres were plunged into darkness until standby plants wore brought into operation, while at the Telegraph Office candles were hurriedly brought into use. There was a serious ielav at the office of the “Southland Times,’’ where the linotype machines were idle for nearly two hours and ahalf, other businesses relying solely on electric power being affected probably to a lesser extent. Beyond the fact that something had gone wrong at the heads works at Monowai, nothing definite has been made known concerning the actual cause of the breakdown. \A hen the lights failed, efforts were immediately made to restore the supply from the steam plant which was previously in use. and by 9.30 this had been accomplished.
