BOWLING

WEST COAST BOWLING TOURNAMENT. OPENING DAY. ’l’he play yesterday on the Hokitika green attracted a large audience as the day wore on and much interest was shown in the play which at times was of an excellent standard. The gro though not last played true, and the pace increased as the day wore on. Three games were played, and the only two rinks to win all three were those representing the local club, skipped by Stevenson ami Benjamin. Tile committee of ladies who kindlv arranged to provide refreshments had a very busy day attending to the players and tin- numerous visitors, hut they worked willingly and the appreciation voiced by the visitors at the kindly attentions given them must have been gratifying and a sullieient reward for their trouble. The players were loud in their appreciation of the hospitality shown. It was a big order but the ladies capably filled tbc position with decided success.

There were some liglit showers during the late night 'but it cleared at daylight and the green rolled out again as well, if not better titan yesterday. The play began shortly after 8 o’clock, and with a welcome adjournment at 10 o’clock for morning tea, the fourth round (first for the day) was concluded at 11 o’clock 'with the following result.
