GAS MAIN BLAZE
SYDNEY SENSATION. FIVE WORKERS INJURED. (Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, Feb. 11. Five men were injured while workon a gas main at Rose Bay, through a spark struck from a pick igniting the gas. The gang were pulling up a roadway which had been undermined by storm water. The two men mast seriously injured, William Jones and Herbert Holmes, were Gas Company employees. They were endeavouring to trace a leak from the main under the road. Suddenly the party were enveloped in flames. All were staggered, and were more or less burned.
The flames continued for 3 couple of hours till the Fire Brigade suppressed them, their task being a difficult one, as explosions occurred frequently underground, and choking fumes were emitted, which made an approach to the fire dangerous.
