BRITAIN AND AMERICA

AIR- R. MACDONALD’S ADVICE

NEW YORK, January 24

The Liberal Magazine “ The Nation ” prints an article by Air J. Ramsay MacDonald (Leader oif tin* British Labour Party) on Anglo-Ameri-can relations. He says: “ The rclarions between the United States and Britain have grown increasingly unhappy. The usual Committees of Friendship are being formed. This is always an 'ominous sign, and the usual signal of faith in doubt is being flown, such as war between Britain and the United States is unthinkable. When 1 heard this I am reminded of the sailor who. when in dire peril, expressed thankfulness that his religion was still left. Mr MacDonald reviews the AngloAmerican naval relations, and he speaks of the causes of war as controllable, and lie indicates the various reasons for mutual distrust.

He adds: “The practical policy of the United States and Britain is exactly the same as that which preceded and prepared for the late war. Let both get to grips with- reality.” In concluding, the British Labour Leader says he wishes to involve the United States in no European escapades and entanglements.-

“Both Governments,” he says, “ ought to appoint five or six of thenmost. outstanding public men, representative (if the whole nation to meet and drag from the obscure corners of sulky suspicion . the , things which make difficulties between, us.”.
