OKURU, Jan. 17. Considerable damage has been caused by floods'throughout the district, including a washout on the Haast Pass t track. Telephone communication is interrupted and is likely to remain so. %fcA n °fher large herd of prime Hereford cattle are being mustered in the Haast Valley for the Otago markets. Professor ' Turner’s geological exploration -party passed through last week with their pack team, en route to. the Red Hills, after experiencing several hold-ups with swollen rivers. Mr Eric Janies lost two valuable horses while returning with the empty pack team, in the Arawata river. The horses became entangled in each other’s saddlery and were drowned while swimming the river. jT Mr W. O’Leary has resigned the Ferry for the second time, and intends to return to the Alps prospecting. An attempt will be made to obtain ' a- renewal of the permit to hold races at Okuru at Easter. Mr Duggan has left the district after many years residence here. His family follow on the next boat. •Work is being commenced on the lower portion of the Haast Track, under Foreman Mcßride. It is understood the new Burke Huts will shortly be put under way. Visitors at Cowan’s Aceommodatior House during the week include Mr F. Turner (Dunedin). Mr La Roach (Auckland). Mr Williams (Dunedin), and W. Sharpe (Christenurcii). ■•’Floods have caused many serious slips bn the Haast Pass Track which will be impracticable for traffic for a week or two The Wills Bridge has been damaged but is still orossable.
