ITALY AND PAPACY
MLETS OPPOSITION OF FREEMASON It Y. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Co py right). LONDON, Jan. 21. The Rome correspondent of the “Morning Post” states: There is reason.to believe that a vigorous campaign has been initiated by- Continental Freemasonry to nullify the reconciliation between the Pone and the Italian state, as the Vatican is regarded as an imnlacahle foe of 1- roemasonry. This is a reason for society in the preliminary negotiations whi'h Signor Mussolini initiated. Another t|nest-ion that has arisen is the relationship between the Holy See and the League of Nations in the event of the Vatican’s return to temporal power. Hitherto the Vatican has Wu represented at Geneva by tin* lapal Nuncio at Berne. When the Church enters the Comity of Nations, however. its ambassadors will have a standing with international potentialities. It must be remembered, however. that the negotiations are onlynow in embryo. A full settlement nr a preliminary settlement cannot be reached for months to poinc.
